This is my favorite hymn because it seems to address every area where I need work. I tend to rely on my own strength and wisdom rather than His. I thrive on man's empty praise rather than placing Him first in my heart. A while a ago A Circle of Quiet posted the lyrics to this and I discovered an unknown (to me) verse 3. I love the imagery of God being a Tower and a Shelter. I love the notion of God being my Dignity. This song is my daily prayer.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking of sleeping, The presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art
.
High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall.
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Ooh - me too, me too! My absolute favorite hymn. (Well, that and a few others...) Miss singing them all with you...
Mind--
Love that hymn, but also am quite fond of "Come Thou Fount"? I especially love v. 3: Oh, to grace, how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be. Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wand'ring heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. Take my heart, oh take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above.
